There was once a suggestion by a minister that one can generate more savings if one shutsdown the railways and people move in taxis. In the year 2009 it could be observed that the revenues for the railways of Greece were approximately $250 million but it was staring at a loss of a huge $1.36 billion. This amount was huge. All this came from the borrowing spree of the government (Brown, 2012).
This was not the situation only in Greece but in other PIIGS nation. In the due time the inflation in the economy was higher than the interest rates being charged. Thus they were being paid when they borrowed money. As a result European countries stacked up huge amount of debt.
The main reason for such easy debt was that these nations were borrowing from the banks of Germany, France as well the Britain. These nations due to the strong financial state could easily raise deposits at much lower rate. These nations’ banks gave loans to these nations at a slight higher rate on the base rates. Thus they were able to get the loans at very less rates.
Meanwhile in Spain the citizens started to speculate more on the real estate. There was huge borrowing and the all the infrastructure was beginning to be finance by this huge amount of spending. The amount which was in circulation, amounted to $700 billion. This was almost half of the total GDP of Spain which was almost 1.4 trillion at that time. However there were hardly any buyers. Due to the huge investment the builders were unable to pay as none of the buyers were paying. As a result there were huge debts on the banks balance sheet and the Spain largest three banks were in deep trouble. This debt was mostly in the private sector. Thus there was huge extravaganza in Spain. People and the builders didn’t think before investing such huge amounts in the real estate. There was a bubble which was being created and everybody jumped into this bubble. Their assets on the balance sheet were approximately $2.7 trillion. This amount was almost double the GDP of nation and all these assets were in trouble.
