With the United States and the United Kingdom as major consumers of organic foods, it is seen that Asia, Latin America and Australasia are seen to be major producers and exporters of organic foods. The organic food industry in the United Kingdom saw an incline in the initial inception which was followed by a decline during the global economic recession period between the years 2008-2010. However as of 2012 the organic food industry has risen and shows a growth of around 2.8 percent in 2014 (Smithers, 2014). In this sales increase the independent retailers of organic food contributed to around 7 percent of the total 10 million £ generated per week. These are both online and offline retailers. Ocado saw a sales increase of around 10.4% and supermarkets and online retailers such as Sainsbury enjoy a market share of 29%. Organic food association reports suggest that as much as four out of five households might be buying organic produce and younger shoppers with an age under 34 would be more willing to spend on organic produce. United Kingdom retailer Tesco reports that organic bananas were preferred more with pink apples, melons and grapes also occupying a higher percentage (Smithers, 2014).
The drive towards organic food is mainly because of the health consciousness of the current day society. Most of the shopper trends are towards healthy food produce as there is ever increasing rates of obesity and food related diseases and conditions such as Diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and more. As of 2011 the World Health Organization predicted that more than 300 million adults who are overweight and hence are at a risk of health disorders (WHO 2011).
