This practise of censorship is not new, but the ideals served by the freedom of speech go beyond any attempt at curbing/muzzling it. Freedom is necessary for the functioning of a vibrant democracy and is needed so that ultimately the truth might see the light of the day. John Stuart Mill put it, “Even if wholly false, a censored opinion would prevent true opinions from becoming dogma” . That is to say any opinion has to be expressed, discussed and looked at from other perspective. Otherwise, one will never be able to establish the truth or falsity of any idea. What more, a true idea may end up becoming dogmatic, leading the entire civilization astray.

It is in this context that questions emerge: how exactly are obscenity and hate defined, and how those definitions hold true against the evolution of technology and society is a matter of much contention. What is immoral today maybe the accepted norm tomorrow. This is why the promoters of free speech insist on self-regulation as a way to practise the right to free speech effectively, without placing blanket curtains on these rights, or penalising the media owners and distributers for any “seemingly” offensive content. However, can there be no limit on the rights and freedoms of an individual so as to protect the similar rights and freedoms of another individual?
