The biological treatment of the air pollution relies on aerobic microorganisms that feed both on inorganic and organic compounds in the waste gas. Biofilters are used in removing vapors from polluted groundwater and soil.
The biofilter is the least expensive and simplest method of biological treatment. Its main component is tree bark, heather, peat, a bed of compost and soil. The material in biofilter bed supplies a microorganism that degrades the pollutants of gasses passing through it. Most of the units in biofilter resemble towers which are designed as a sealed vertical container. The inflow of gas and humidity should be controlled carefully. The gas should be saturated with water vapor, dust free and be at the temperature of 10 to 40 °C.
A bioscrubber consist of wastewater treatment and air pollution control technologies and consist of a biological treatment and scrubber basin. The oxygen and waste gasses are absorbed continuously into the water in the scrubber. In the basin unit, the biological oxidation takes places which are the activated basin of the wastewater treatment plant. The bioscrubbers are used when the biological degradation products harm the biofilter bed. Bioscrubbers are used to eliminate chlorinated organic.
