Proponents of Second Language Acquisition universally uphold the fact that to understand the tenets of second language without quality-based, quantitative specific inputs is not possible. However, Krashen and Terell’s model of ‘comprehensible input’, defined by meaning-oriented approaches though necessary and relatively successful in developing native learners’ fluency, were not exhaustive by their very nature and hence, the need for a formal accurate method was observed. This need to a better form or structure of input instructions guiding native learners learn effectively, gave rise to various methods such as, ‘attention and noticing’ and ‘input enhancement’, which shall be the crux of this current study.

Textual enhancement, also addressed as ‘visual enhancement’ is brought in form through ‘underlining, boldfacing, or capitalizing, etc.’ on the premise that learners automatically lean towards emphasized portions in the text and grasp those input features better. Noticing and comprehension are key ingredients of this method. However, whether these methods are effective in second language acquisition in today’s times in the context of linguistic aptitude remains to be seen. While learning theories as well as principles will be given due credit to, competing views of different scholars on the subject matter shall also be taken into account. The study shall also include shedding light on empirical studies/experiments on the basis of the current premise. Though most scholars tend to lean towards textual enhancement as bearing heavily on second language acquisition, there are dissenters of the said theory as well. The review shall feature comparisons between different input (textual enhancement) and output based methods based on their end result, while underlining the problems areas. The research shall try and bring out a balanced approach, while in the process focusing on ways in which the lacunae-ridden areas can be improved upon.
