One method used for calculating that how many electronic components could be recycled is, make a rough guess of electronic appliances at your home. We made a table which contained columns of Appliance name, brand, model, its life cycle stage (it contained 4 sub-columns of 1st use, 2nd use, and then storage and end life), and finally a column named as “e-waste disposal ban. The life cycle stage indicated its useful life; for instance; if an inventory was bought new 4 years back then we would write YES or 4years under column 1st use. After checking the inventory that whether it is present in the disposal ban as mandatory by the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act or not. If yes then write yes under the last column. This indicates that at the end life of inventory one must plan something for recycling it.
At the end compare your results with the guess and observe that how useful this exercise had been.
The results have elaborated the life of electronic items and you have understood that which appliance would be dangerous as e-waste and which not. If you have something in your storage that can be a useful e-waste than do check its brand’s take-back program; if they have it than you should contact them for requesting the recycling of your appliance.
Result
The result shows that very few of electronic equipment’s can be recycled as most of the electronic components contain hazardous components which can be harmful if recycled. It should be taken care of that such appliances shouldn’t be dump in soil or water directly. The Table below shows the observations.
