Current society is prone to both natural and man-made disasters and each of them leading to a struggle in political ideologies, social thinking’s and more. Rebecca Solnit argues that manmade elitist thinking comes under change. When a disaster creates a struggle, the old order might change giving rise to a better city and in some others the same order with all its shortcomings are reimposed. The essay considers New Orleans as the case study city which came under the disaster effects of Hurricane Katrina. The essay argues that the new order that was superimposed was one which had some transformative changes. However, it also ended up highlighting the shortcomings and oppressiveness of previous policies in a more transparent manner.

Socio-ecological theories on resilience such as the ones discussed by Davoudi et al. and disaster based transformation discussed by Solnit as applied in the context of New Orleans does show that the city reaped some transformative benefits because of the Katrina disaster. The problems of New Orleans, their racial situation and socio-economic discrepancies were created over time. It was created over years and hence the solution for this cannot just happen in the aftermath or reflective thinking triggered over a disaster. Transformation although slow and minimal does happen in the aftermath of a disaster. Hence, the research works arguments on transformation happening because a disaster is an acceptable notion.
