The Understanding of Contemporary Geographical Imaginations
Geographical imagination relatively depicts the manifestation of ideas and emotions in a specific culture, ethnicity or place. Orientalism is formed as geographical imagination, or being a more specific geographical imagination focusing upon the Asians or the Orient (Dittmer, 2005).
In the context of Philippine, situations within which there is application of geographical imagination and Orientalism are literally present. One mutual case is when an individual will appear distinctly Korean, Japanese or Caucasian. In such a case, Filipinos hold the tendency of thinking that an individual will be more or less superior, irrespective of who the individual is actually and what is being done by the person. An additional case is regarding the generalized situation of Muslims by the people of Philippine (Frank, 2009). There is some discrimination faced by Muslims due to international and domestic terrorist attacks all across the globe and in Philippine as well. While the truth might be that the terrorists belonged to the Muslim community, one cannot and should not state that the entire Muslim population spread across the globe have key involvement in terrorism (Said, 2001).
It is worth noting by now that Orientalism is formed as geographical imagination having sole focus upon the Orient. It can also be highlighted that geographical imagination and Orientalism have been related since many years (Frank, 2009). They still have strong existence across the society, whether they can be noticed or not. In the current era of modernization, the basic preference for vacation spots, clothing or food appears to be highly affected by specific assumptions and expectations regarding a specific place or a group of people. Some of the assumptions do not appear to cause any harm, but these tend to be affecting economies, religions, countries, ethnic groups, tourist spots, and establishments (Haldrup et al., 2006). There cannot be key reliability upon mere imagination for the prevention of offending anyone else that might have key involvement for the same.
The images across the globe, geographical imagination and the diverse individuals assisting a group in the definition of its identity can be considered as cultural representations carrying both ideological and emotional weight. In terms of human geography, the researches of geographical imagination are representations taken seriously. They act as images shaping the understanding and identities of people across the globe, shaping the entire world (Harvey, 1995). Therefore, geographical imagination seems to be blurring differences between the fictional and real world. This does not mean they are real due to the accurate depiction of geographic imagination across the globe, but instead they provide reinforcement and reflection for the imagination of people across the globe in concrete and tangible ways.
