In 1896, the first motion pictures were introduced in China. The silent films were introduced in Japan in 1897. There were story tellers “Benshi” who were hired to tell the stories during this time. “Conquering Jun Mountain” (1905) was the first attempt made for film creation in China. In 1910, there was a strong intellectual movement in Japan that had stemmed a new film making genre for the Japanese film making. It was in 1913 that the Chinese film industry had its inception. In 1920, there was a strong American influences in the technical aspects of film making in China. In 1920, there was a strong nationalistic movement and the left wing movement was prominent in Japan. Tendency films started to develop in this industry. There was realism that was observed in both these film industries. It was after 1930 that there was more influences of the government in both these industries. Propaganda films, realistic themes were introduced in Japan while there was more government auditing in the Chinese films.

Film making was severely audited and restricted from 1966 to 1976. It was after this time that there was more freedom to the Chinese filmmakers. This caused flourishment of the industry. Chinese film industry flourished after this time. Japanese film making also improved towards the end of the 20th century.
