A general fault with simulation methods is that they tend to be cost prohibitive. Specific experts need to be hired who can enact the situations with ease. There are many kinds of simulation techniques that are used by organizations in order to provide their students with an immersive learning experience. We will discuss some of these techniques along with their advantages and disadvantages:
The first kind of simulation technique that we will use in this section is that of role plays. The major emphasis in role plays is on human behavior. The participants are faced with situations that they are expected to face in the future. The role-playing is done mainly in three stages.
The role-plays can be made-up or staged by the trainer or they can be enacted by the participants. The advantage of the former is that the outcome is predetermined. In the latter method, the trainer simply lets the task be reconstructed and the participants have to enact their own methods. The advantage of the latter method is that it brings out a scenario hat is more likely to be connected to real-life situations. However a disadvantages is that the learning aspect is at the mercy of the participants staging abilities. Role-plays have a great degree of ‘acting’ involved in which situations have to be conjured up and then acted out. This not only includes a lot of imagination from the part of the participants but also the ability to put that imagination into a real-life context – to give material shape to that imagination through the use of acting which is an skill and may not be harbored by the great majority of people (Mumford 1992).
