The second principle that was given by Ernest was the principle of an open community. An open community relates to the fact that in the university should encourage freedom of expressions and hence the freedom of speech and that there should be no compromises regarding this fact. Also in the community, civility should be powerfully affirmed. Our community should practice this principle where every gets to have a say in the running of things whether it being through the student council or through any other means. There should not be such hindrances that would prevent someone from sharing their opinion. People should listen to other peoples of the community regardless of them being a freshman or someone in the administration; everyone should respect the rights and the dignity of everyone else. Yes, I do think that we should practice this in our university since this would create an environment which would be friendly and sharing everyone would feel of themselves as an important part of the community rather than just a small clog in a machine. We all know that there exists cliques in universities, some are more popular than others and get their message across better. However, the university should encourage freedom of expression to remedy this and as being a part of a community we need to understand other’s freedom too and refrain from violating their freedom space. This can be practiced through promoting freedom of speech or for example denouncing offensive language. (Boyer)
