It is observed that there are various aspects and methodologies that help to determine the goal and effectively contribute to its success. The mission statement of an organization is one of the most important factors that have an impact on the organizational structure. Therefore, it is quite relevant to assess the mission statements of various organizations, in order to clearly understand its impact on the organizational goal and process. This paper tries to evaluate the benefits of a mission statement by comparatively analyzing the mission statements of two different organizations.
The mission statement of McDonald’s is different in tone and essence as it says:
“Our mission is to be our customers’ favourite place and a way to eat & drink. We’re dedicated to being a great place for our people to work; to being a strong, positive presence in your community; and to delivering the quality, service, cleanliness and value our customers have come to expect from the Golden Arches – a symbol that’s trusted around the world” (McDonald’s, 2010).
These mission statements clearly demonstrate the organizational goals of these organizations through the promotion of their core competence and a hint of their products. Whereas Samsung hugely concentrates on the technological development, McDonald’s want to establish itself as the most desirable and most loved place for fast food and drink services.
Mission statements are highly beneficial for determining business policies, philosophy, values, and the process through which the organizations should function, act and approach towards their goals (Bart and Baetz, 1998). Experts recommend that a mission statement can be regarded as the preliminary and short blueprint for the structural and sequential process of the desired activities of the organization. A mission statement can vary from one organization to the other. But it is immensely effective in conceptualizing and eventually actualizing the business plans and mentoring the direction of the company (Mintzberg, Ahlstrand, and Lampel, 2005). Having a mission statement makes it easier for an organization to properly analyze its goals and services and then act according to the requirements. A mission statement can also act as a method of advertisement (Hamel, 2016). These statements promote the directives and principles of the organizations and it helps to attract the stakeholders and the consumers.
These benefits are quite evident in the two cases analyzed in this paper. The mission statement of Samsung helped the organization to focus on technological improvements and innovations by the proper implementation of skills. Samsung has concentrated on this aspect and acted accordingly to provide the consumers with high-quality products. They also built their own community of Samsung lovers. It helped the organization to establish itself as a leading manufacturer of technological products in the global scenario. On the other hand, the mission statement of McDonald’s helped the organization to concentrate solely on the quality of food and drinks and enhancing the customer satisfaction through friendly service. The statement helps the McDonald’s to remember that it should always act accordingly so that the consumer expectations attached with the Golden Arch can always be maintained. Thus, the mission statements helped these organizations to follow some simple business policies in order to establish themselves as the leaders in their respective fields
Mission statements can really prove to be helpful if they are properly constructed and accordingly followed. They set specific goals for the organizations in advance. It makes easier for the organizations to act through some simple processes. It also allows the organizations to reach to the stakeholders and the consumers through a simple method. A mission statement is indeed a short statement with vast functionality and broad effectiveness.
