The purpose of this paper is to analyse the article “Revitalization and indigenous resistance to globalization and neoliberalism” authored by James V. Fenelon and Thomas D. Hall. The aim of the article is to discuss the case studies of the Indigenous people living in America, Latin America, India, Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa and Southeast Asia. The author has discussed the general model of the Indigenous people in terms of social and economic systems, land tenure and community relationships. Two specific models related to Indigenous people have been included in the study in context to Indigenous revitalization and another model is based on the indigenous resistance to dominance.
Analysis of Article
The author has discussed the condition of the indigenous people in general terms rather than taking up the individual case studies. The author has taken this approach to avoid the reductionist situation. Indigenous resistance and revitalization have been discussed in terms of world system, because author believes that it is important to understand the cultural system and autonomy of the indigenous people in comparison to traditions and cultures of those, who have dominated indigenous people. In the paper, author has identified the four important issues that demonstrate the indigenous resistance. The four issues discusses are the global historical context, cultural traditions, social and spiritual values replaced by accumulation and competition and positive involvement with earth and land as the source of living instead of obtaining profit from natural resources.
Invasion and colonization have significantly affected the life and culture of indigenous people. Although it has been seen that indigenous people are now believed to be the non-dominant sector of the society, yet the world’s system has significant impact on their present condition. The author has included the various world-views for developing the perspective of humanity towards indigenous people. The historical system of dominance over the indigenous people includes colonization. However, the contemporary system of dominance is related to the opportunities and cultural competence. This explains that indigenous people often have the complex interaction with the world system and this interaction is affected on the local, regional, state and national levels.
