This essay would discuss about the classical management theories and their relevance in the modern era. In this era, we are encouraged to inspect new approaches to management, theoretically and practically. Although we should remain mindful of the contribution the classical management theories and practices which have laid the foundation and paved the way of the “new era” of management. We have reached a time where we have to throw off the chains of old theories and clinch new paradigms. We would also discuss the nuances of the employer-employee relations which would actually mean the various relationships between employers and employees in industrial organisations. As correctly defined by  Dale Yoder, the much used term employer-employee relations refer to the plethora of relationship among people, which more precisely can be defined as the human relationship that co-exist because of the compulsory association of men and women in the process of employment in the modern industry.

Management is being studied for barely a century but has been treated as one of the most important phenomena. The conventional conceptualisation of the job of the manager was introduced in 1916 by Fayol which covers planning, organising, commanding, co-ordinating and controlling. There are several studies which elaborates that managers are involved in planning, co-ordinating, controlling, and problem. It has also been found that a considerable time of the managers’ get allocated to perform “the PRINCESS” factors (Planning, Representing, Investigating, Negotiating, Co-ordinating, Evaluating, Supervising and Staffing) (Carroll, S. J., & Gillen, D. I., 1987, pp 38-51).  The study of management can be broken into planning, organising, staffing, leading and controlling. We would discuss briefly about these five pillars to get an insight of the techniques of management.

Planning: Planning is the primary function of managing that creates the way for the other functions and is helpful in determining the efficacy of their execution and being able to predict future through forecasting. Planning means to look ahead with respect to the time, available resources and implementation of the project.
