In People’s Republic of China (PRC), there were polarized attitudes that the people had developed towards English as a school subject. The people are still in a conundrum whether to incorporate English into the main stream education. There is fear towards loss of culture and the impact of western ideologies in the state. The English language teaching proponents argue that to survive in the current times, the need for English as a business language is imperative. In China, there is mandatory nine years course that is followed by the senior secondary school. This is a part of the three-year academic course and the main aim is to prepare the students to have a tertiary education. The curriculum includes the course of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These are the main subjects that are covered. There is teaching of the foreign language, political sciences and other arts programs. There is teaching of the humanities courses that are taught in schools. There is the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE). In this, the foreign language of English is considered to be a core component of testing for the students
The foreign language subject is not compulsory for the preschool and the elementary school students. This is compulsory for the secondary and post-secondary schools and institutions. There are more than 80 million full-time secondary students who are currently learning languages other than Mandarin. In this, the majority of the students take the English as the preferred foreign language course.
Junior secondary students are made to learn the language by taking classes for three or four contact hours. There is around 400 hours of formal instruction for learning the foreign language. There are basic rules of the language that is taught to the students. The major aspect that is taught to the student is understanding of the gist of the subject that is taught to the student and it is retold by the teacher.
