Attire in itself is not important but the perception behind which is its significant. The ideology behind dressing by individuals is examined.
Throughout the evolution of mankind, there has always been a close link between the attire and social identity. The manner of dressing is also closely associated with the geography and climate of a place. Apart from that, it is also a reflection of the society in which the person dwells. Dressing in a certain fashion is a metaphorical manner in which the person chooses to identify with the society and the social group the people identify themselves with. The people choose to dress in a certain manner even though the attire they are wearing is not comfortable. During war times and rebellion, the manner of dressing speaks directly to the social group, political ideas to which an individual belongs and the identity of the individual. The Islamic women choose to cover their faces in an attempt to express their cultural identity even though they mask their faces they speak to the public about their religious beliefs and their identity. This speaks volumes about the importance of clothing. Miller says ideology behind dressing up in a particular fashion is a close reflection of how the person chooses the world to interpret them as an individual. Miller clearly explains that clothing a person is similar to the peeling of onions. But the idea of dressing up in a certain fashion is to express them in a non-verbal manner. The general opinion that is prevailing among the masses is that clothing is a sign of frivolity. Generally people dismiss the fashion trends and style of attire as something that is shallow and say that it has no real value. However, the social anthropologists differ in this view as they say it people knowingly or unknowingly express a statement of their identity by their choice of clothing. Miller goes on to explain that the classic tale of “Emperor has got new clothes” is an example of how social ideologies and perception of people plays an important role in defining the person and their attire. Even though the emperor did not wear any clothes the people’s view initially was to respect it.
