Galilee is a part of Northern Israel and is usually referred to as Upper Galilee and Lower Galilee. The region is a tourist destination because of historical relevance and natural aesthetic beauty. From being a British mandated territory, to coming under Israel’s control in the Arab Israeli war of 1948, the population of Galilee from the past times have been displaced many times over. As of 1970s, the region has been threatened by the Palestine Liberation Organization which was met with planned counter resistance by Operation Litani and Operation Peace for Galilee by Israel. With Hezbollah attack continuing in the area opposing the Israeli forces as of 2006 onwards, the Israel-Lebanon conflict with rocket attacks has been the major issue. The Israeli Palestinian conflict is at the root of the attacks. During 1982, “Peace for Galilee” was undertaken in order to quell the attacks from Palestinian people. they were labelled terrorist by Israel. Conflicts between the Israel Defense forces and the non-Jewish majority failed to achieve any form of definitive conclusion for the conflicts happening in the state (Marshall, 1999). There were many military and civilian causalities that were identified at this point. Background to the “Peace for Galilee”
Galilee is a modern nation state that had come under the rule of Israel. However, its roots and traditionalism are not just founded in Israel and herein lie the core of the issues. There are different stakeholders with different social and ideological roots in the nation. Much of the tensions in the case of contemporary Israel are owing to conflict of ideologies, social thoughts, culture and religious sentiments. The Sunni-Shiite Conflict in the Modern Middle East has led to a resurgence in conflict issues as their struggles have led to a Syrian civil war. This could transform the area, displace people and result in the migration of more refugees and more civil tensions.
The Israel Palestinian conflict involves a very small tract of land and compared to other conflicts. There are a few million-people involved only with little or scant mineral resources forming part of the conflict equations. In this context, drawing a borderline for a solution will not work and this seemingly logical way of approaching the problem is seen to cast a shadow on the peace-making processes, as the solution does not exactly cover all elements at the root of the problem (Bregman & El-Tahri, 1998).
