CSR’s Recent Trend

In the years 2001 and 2002, reputation in the accounting and business professions with regards to ethical practice got a severe beating in relation to the consumer confidence. Firstly, there was the surfacing of the Enron scandal in 2001 that resulted in the job losses amounting to thousands, and losses of homes and savings in U.S. As per Forbes, several practices of unethical and corporate malpractices rose to 20 cases (Rosenberg, 2002). There was response from organizational stakeholders, parties affected or likely to be affected; which includes investors, environment, community, creditors, government, suppliers, employees and customers (Backhaus et al., 2002). They responded with demand that there should be more devotion from the corporations in allocating more resources to the CSR measures in mending this profession’s spoiled reputation. Between 2001, March and 2002, July demand increased drastically. The figure below shows the views expressed by 1,040 adults in United States in a study conducted by Cone Communications, where the views are obtained via telephonic survey.

The demand that increased in the last decade has augmented the CSR policy integrations and resulted in increase in the reporting of the corporate on socially responsible projects. As per Giving USA, there was a rise in charitable donations provided by the corporations to the tune of $14.6 billion on 2011, where as in comparison the donations were only $9.05 billion in 2001. This is an increase of 61.3 percent. However, the graph provided underneath shows that the increase in donations were not steady over the decade in United States, which signifies that some economic and social events had impact on corporate philanthropy (Henderson, 2001).

In 2003, the corporate donations increased by 13.5 percent. The explanation of such increase can be the increase in the intentions of the corporations in rebuilding the tainted image of the industry that was tarnished during the financial scandals in the last decade. Even in 2005, the increase of donations was significant because the corporation collaborated in their contribution and fundraising to the efforts of disaster relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The highest marginal increase in donations took place in 2007 with a rise of 13.9 percent in corporate donations. In the first half of 2007, there was enormous rise in the performance of the stock market and during this year the economic growth and GDP of United States peaked. The 2007 U.S. GDP could not be eclipsed until 2010, as per the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The figure below shows the housing bubble burst with enormous impact on U.S. economy.
