Ameridian & Iberian Background for Latin dance forms
The colonial period in Latin America started from 16th century and lasted till the 19th century. At that time, various Amerindian people decimated destroying Amerindian music and culture. Today little evidence can be found on the real music and dance forms of Aztec, Inca and Maya civilizations. When Amerindian population combined with Indians and Africans, they survived on the basis of their previous traces for music and cultural forms. Some of the Iberian genres have survived in their true forms and origins of Iberian origins came out when fiddles, guitars and other songs adopted from the Spanish verse structures started. Genres include Desafio from the region of Brazil, Cueca from Chile and Bolivia, Joropo was adopted from Venezuela, Sones and Corrido from Mexico, Sies from Puerto Rico and Punto from Cuba. These dance forms were usually danced in couples and main attractions from these dance forms were in the form of tapping and scarf waving (Bakan, 2012).
Development in the Latin dance forms
Various dance forms of Latin dance were separated from the cultural origins, but some dance forms limited to one city. Most important dance forms were associated with Latin America were linked with the social spheres in the structured manner and professional musicians were given on these dance forms. Most famous dance forms were Bachata, Samba, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Mambo, Salsa and Merengue. Folk dance form like Mexican hat dance of the rural areas developed in a separate genre after 1850. These genres were modified after European Polka and Waltz was added in these dance forms. Music became the engine for every dance form and gave energy to the soul. Many Latin American regions have independent music style because music and dance were combined together for making a new dance form. For example, Mambo was originated during 1940 as a result of American swing music and Cuban son music. This style is still followed today. Dance history needs to be traced with the music history because music has helped in the modification of various dance forms. Various Latin dance forms have a significant influence because they can be improvised with the passage of time (Bakan, 2012).
