This opportunistic tendency of immigrants has led to feelings of antipathy among people in many developed countries. This coupling with rising nationalism, anti immigrant sentiments & protectionism in many rich societies has added fuel to fire. For instance, the Hispanophobia prevalent in large parts of US is legendary but with rising remittances to Hispanic countries, ranging up to several billions of dollars along with economic turmoil and rising unemployment levels in US has led to sporadic violence & protests against Hispanics. Something similar has been seen in UK, where Asians account for over 3% of the population & cities being flooded with immigrants from poor eastern European countries. All in all, immigration has become a hot topic in many western nations. Tighter immigration controls could hamper remittances to the developing world. What’s critical is what people individually do with the remittances. Their spending methods of people can have positive and negative consequences. Unbridled consumption could lead to increase in import, decrease in foreign exchange & can be hazardous for development in the absence of sustainable economy (Yang, 2004). This can be turned into a constructive process when consumption coincides with demand for local products and services, thus generating employment & strengthening the economy.
