After 1980s, frame theory, especially frame as a verb, was stated to have a significant impact in the area of journalism and communication. In this area, scholars study frame theory in specific mechanism as seen from writing of Goffman. Gitlin (1980:6) considers frame as “principles of selection, emphasis and presentation composed of little tacit theories about what exists, what happens, and what matters”. While according to Robert Entman (1993), frame includes two general effects: “selection” and “salience”. He points out that frame something means to select a particular part of event regarding as important, and then makes special treatment in the report in order to show the advices of explanation, ratiocination, estimation and disposal routes. What will happen without this special treatment is something to ponder on as it can be seen that framing is mostly a complex mixture of selection and salience and without this the news representation might itself be less presentable. This is especially true when the news that is being framed if for a larger section of audience that might possible be unconnected with the news. This concept that Robert Entman talks about is particularly useful for news events happening in other countries that will not be much comprehensible to other nations because they are not directly connected to it. This is of particular significance here as this dissertation seeks to analyze how disaster events are represented by various news media of different parts of the world and only in framing can the different news media be able to present the same event in an applicative context for people. Robert Entman’s representation of the salience and the selection are both admissive of the effects of frame. As Tankard (1991) argues, frame is the center of news as this frame adds the necessary elements towards not only understanding the news but also understanding the more contemporary societal treatment of the news.
