In this theory the development of a child is alluded to the blooming of a flower. In the theory proposed by Gesell he states that there is generally a mix of good and bad years for a child during the process of development (Pickren, Dewsbury, & Wertheimer, 2012). Maturational theory is a mix of physical and mental development of the child. It focusses on the development of growth and development of a child from infancy to childhood (Slee, & Shute, 2014). According to this theory if there is any issue faced by the child it is because of the perceptions held by the child and the environment plays a big importance on the development of the child. There is generalisation of how the children behave at certain intervals of times. Using this as a timetable the parents and teachers can learn about the development and progress of the child based on the normative behavior of the child. Normative patterns were made by Gesell after spending innumerable hours observing the child.
Modern critics who study the theory of maturational model stress on the fact that this theory does not explain the situation as a whole. It does not factor in the environmental factors but only focusses on the individual child. Even though these are all observational theories and subjective reasoning of the child is important, not factoring in the environment of the child can pose to be a problem. Also the observations were made on the middle class children and their families. Owing to this the veracity of the findings has been questioned. However Gesell theory points to the importance of narrative identity of a person. Narrative identity of an individual points to the internal dynamics life story that has been construed by the individuals. Narrative identity of a person is closely related to the subjective reasoning by the individuals to keep them happy and satisfied. Narrative identity focusses on how the self tries to keep a person happy. However, many theories points to the importance of environmental factors and their impacts on the individuals.
One observation, the impact of narrative identity and the relevance of maturational theory can be understood. Some children try to keep themselves be busy and be happy. But there are also external events that caused them to behave in a certain way. Narrative identity does not seem to answer all the questions of the person as a whole. The normative standards of the law and the social conformities seem to have an impact on the children (Schwartzman, 2012). It was found that in the case of sports when the children were taught to learn about certain tricks in playing a particular game and other children were taught to help the kids who were struggling in their games (Bauer, McAdams, & Pals, 2008). It was found that the children all started to play together. From this the differences in narrative identity can be understood. There is a significant impact that the environment causes on the people and they need to be probed to understand the significance of a person’s character as a whole. Narrative identity of a person does not factor in the ways in which the social development of the children is created. There is an influenced of external situations to the development and maturations. This has been professed by eminent psychologists from historical periods to the current times. Therefore, other behavioral and social theories have been considered in this analysis.
