In the 1970s and during the latter 1990’s the Government attempts to intervene to address much of the issues for the state and the city. Air quality differentials were tested out and environmental justice movement took over to help the lower income groups and minorities to breath better. Higher concentration of pollutants that led to the increase exposure for low income backgrounds was controlled by means of laws. Psychological stress that might also be a trigger was controlled by means of community help. 5In current times, inclusive of the Bronzeville community, the Chicago suburb area is seen to have help from the urban councils and community health care. There are still concerns about the increasing particulate levels because of the decisions taken by the housing authority to bring down some of Chicago’s high rise constructions. In particular the constructions of the 16-17 story buildings in the main community would lead to increase in construction debris in the air. This would lead to more pollutant levels.
Chicago community and governance councils have worked on different means to increase the air quality and to this extent have attempts to install traffic poles in order to study and track the air quality. In current times, the urban environment of Chicago is fitted with what is called the Fitbit. There are many computer nodes being fitted in the urban environment. These nodes help the city to capture data on the forms of pollutions and the areas in which pollution is high.
Secondly, similar to New York, Chicago is also planning to increase the number of trees it has in its areas. It is seen that the number of trees in most of the high pollutant areas are actually low. Where there is better increased number of trees then it will be possible to reduce the number of pollutants as well. Using low VOC emitting trees would be helpful for reducing ozone formation in high pollutant areas and the council has proposed to include more trees in some of the high rise boulevards.
