As per the movie, the young Chinese boy, Li Cunxin was a person who had immense human dignity and respect for the same. Li’s determined courage helped him to make a mark in the space of ballet in the United States in spite of opposition from his motherland and emerged victorious where he could come back to China to perform to a million cheers. The human dignity expressed by Li was affirmative and it held him together and helped him garner respect for the same. However, in the book, the young girl, Min who whole heartedly believed in Mao’s communism faces a conflict with the system when her favourite teacher is put on trial and she testifies against her. The repressive nature of communism had a destructive impact on all human attachments and Anchee Min was a victim to it. As all her relations tore apart, her human dignity faltered as she had to survive. Red Azalea is thus a reflection of Min’s personal journey as she leaves the hard world of Communist China (Donnelly, J., 1982, pp 303).

A character if need arises to be chosen as a true epitome of human dignity, it would be Li Cunxin from the movie, Mao’s Last Dancer. An eleven year old boy who was the resident in a rural village commune was destined to labour in the fields. But as he got an opportunity to train in a ballet academy in Beijing, he worked wonders. When the American based English director Ben Stevenson wanted him as an exchange student, Li’s determined courage, focus and dignity influenced a teacher to convince the academy to allow him a three months stay in the United States. As he settles in the ocean of opportunities in United States, much different to what he had encountered in China; he was able to attract attention in America. When he requested an extension of stay in America the Chinese government refused to grant him. Li’s rushed marriage to Elizabeth Mackey grants him a stay in United States but he declares his personal responsibility for the decision and he perseveres in his refusal to repatriate which again shows him as an epitome of human dignity. Lastly, when Li is eventually granted permission to visit China, he rejoins his family and forms a teacher and gives an impromptu outdoor ballet performance to the uproarious cheer of the village. Thus, he emerges victorious clinging to his dignity in the darkest hours (Smaill, B., 2010, pp 28).
