Study details: Children with Autism will usually show social and communication skills impairment. Their day to day life is affected because of these impairments. There are many early childhood interventions for the children with autism and the Floor Time Play is one such. The Floor Time Play FTP basically helps the child meet its milestones for development from the age of 0 – 48 months. Basically in FTP, the adults involved with the children go down on the floor and play with their children interactively for around six to 20minutes in a day (Greenspan & Wieder, 1998). The intervention efficacy of the FTP is tested in the research of Dionne & Martini (2010).

Research question/objective: The research objective is to determine how effective the FTP intervention could be when used for a child with autism.

Study design: Single subject design was used here. The research subject is just one person and in this research, it is a child with autism.

Setting: A private clinic was the setting for the research

Participants: The participant was a 3 years, and six months old boy child. Autism diagnosis was done when child was 2 years and 5 months of age. The researcher advertised the study with the Autism Society and recruited child. All ethical practices were followed as required.

Intervention[s]: The parent of the child was also involved in the interventions. In the first 30 minutes, observation took place. Semi structured activities were given to the child and no FTP intervention was initiated. The Phase A observation took place for eight sessions/ 2 weeks. The Phase B was the intervention phase. This phase was spread over a time period of 28 sessions/ 7 weeks. In this intervention phase, an occupational therapist taught the mother FTP interventionist techniques. Some of the interventionist techniques used were that of having child interaction patterns such as CoC, play scenario between child and parent and guiding parents to provide verbal suggestions. Parents were also taught to watch out for sensory overload.
