Worldwide the ASEAN is identified as the most successful organization after the EU. Constant comparisons are made between the two organizations (Xin Hua News agency, 2003). In the recession starting from the year 2000 the economic state of many of the countries within the EU has deteriorate, this circumstance has increased the importance of the ASEAN worldwide. The Vision 2020 document developed in 1997 is central to this global perspective. The document contributed to greater integrated economic and political co-operation to strengthen the region during economic threat. This document had originally been viewed as a standalone partnership to address economic issues and not any military alliances.
