The idea of ambivalence itself may not be detrimental to society’s order; in fact, it may be integral to the very existence of order in the society. What is harmful is the existence of difference due to ambivalence that jeopardizes the human life at stake. Strangers to the idea of peace and tranquility not only hurt their world existence but cause massive disaster for several other people. Adolf Hitler, an anarchist by nature, had a completely different way of thinking and doing things. He brought down to himself and millions of other people a war of immense magnitude and devastation.
What needs to be done is that ambivalence must be tabled for discussion in the educational strategies. Bauman rightly suggested that modernity is all about tolerance for otherness of others. The different otherness of other human being must not be considered as a problem that must be solved through either assimilation or reduction to a negative level. Development of tolerance level must be encouraged at the very first stage.
Our educational system must neither mandate a future for future generations nor solely restrict itself to building order and consensus in the society. Moral grounds must not be pre-established at the strategy level. Idea should be to better understand the way things have been done by welcoming ideas and innovations different from the status quo.
Attitude of tolerance may clearly be preferred over intolerant behavior but this should not applicable to people who do not deserve tolerance, i.e., terrorists, racists, murderers, etc. Clearly being tolerant has its boundaries too. This creation of boundaries actually ensures survival of majority and their utility for many humans in any society. Hospitality, as a result, cannot be unconditional and is therefore unwelcomed in all the cases.
